Alberta’s recovery-focused addiction agency to address data gap
The launch of Alberta’s Centre of Recovery Excellence comes as Ontario and Saskatchewan also shift to recovery-oriented models
On April 2, 2024, the Alberta provincial government announced two groundbreaking initiatives: the establishment of the Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence (CoRE) and Recovery Alberta, a new agency dedicated to mental health and addiction services.
The creation of CoRE was driven by a singular purpose: to find the most effective ways to support recovery. The centre’s mission is to empower decision making with the best available information on what works and what does not work to support individuals with mental illness or addiction in their pursuit of recovery. This analysis of the Alberta Recovery Model will inform best practices, conduct comprehensive assessments and program evaluations, and support the development of functional policies in mental health and addiction.
CoRE is committed to transforming how recovery is understood and achieved. To ensure its stability and effectiveness, CoRE was designated to become a Crown corporation under the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction.
CoRE provides leadership not only within Alberta but across Canada and internationally. In addition to existing program evaluation, the centre’s aim is to research best practices for recovery from around the world, analyze data meticulously, and make objective and reliable recommendations. CoRE represents a bold step forward in the quest for better mental health and addiction outcomes, embodying hope, innovation, and excellence in every endeavor.
The “Alberta Recovery Model” is a framework for providing access to a continuum of services across four areas of prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery.
To find the most effective ways to support recovery.
Empowering decision-making with data and evidence to support people in their pursuit of recovery.
We prioritize clarity, ensuring our research and support are transparent, simple, and easy to understand.
Upholding honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct. Our commitment to unbiased, scientific analysis and recommendations to support the formulation of public policies, devoid of political or personal biases.
We value exploration, continuously seeking out new frontiers and opportunities to improve recovery approaches.
We value expertise, leveraging our professional knowledge and experience to lead and innovate in the field of mental health and addiction recovery.
One of CoRE’s key goals is to bridge the gap between research and real-world application. The centre collaborates with experts both locally and globally to develop and implement practical policies. This collaborative approach ensures that CoRE’s work is grounded in scientific and actionable insights.
CoRE is proud to have a team that is passionate about improving outcomes for Albertans with mental illness or addiction. Our team brings a deep understanding of recovery-oriented systems of care.
